In the early 1980s, IWC’s head-watchmaker Kurt Klaus set out on an engineering journey to translate the Gregorian calendar with its many irregularities into a mechanical program for a wristwatch. His ingenious perpetual calendar, which debuted in the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar in 1985, comprises only about 80 parts and displays the date, day, month, year in four digits, and the moon phase. The smart mechanical program automatically recognises the different length of the months, and even adds a leap day at the end of February every four years.

The very first IWC pilot watch was produced in the mid-1930s for civil aviation purposes. Since then, numerous editions have been produced, earning it a reputation for being a precise timepiece with outstanding technology.

The Big Pilot’s Watch embodies the brand’s extensive expertise in engineering professional precision instruments for the cockpit, earning the status of a cultural icon whose appeal extends far beyond the watchmaking industry.

CONTINUING A LONG-STANDING TRADITION

This Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar continues the collection’s long-standing tradition of allowing the perpetual calendar to take centre stage on the dial.

Housed in a 46.2mm stainless steel case with an oversized conical crown reminiscent of an historic observation watch from the 1940s, this watch fastens securely with a racing green rubber strap.

But it is the racing green dial that commands attention with its large proportions and perpetual calendar, which automatically recognises the different month lengths and leap years, and will not need to be manually adjusted until 2100.

The IWC-manufactured 52615 calibre provides precision and reliability with its Pellaton winding system, which uses every small movement of the rotor to build a power reserve of 7 days.
